The Italian Military Geographic Institute (IGMI) provides geotopographic support to the units and commands of the Italian Army and is the cartographic body of the Italian State, according to Law N° 68 of 1960.
The institute is responsible for the production, updating and sale of maps, services, and geographic data, using cutting-edge technologies and innovative methods. Its activities also include research and development of geographic information systems (GIS), thus contributing to the knowledge and management of the national territory.
Since July 1st 2024, Major General Luigi POSTIGLIONE is the Commander of the Italian Military Geographic Institute.
Graduated in Civil Engineering, majoring in Transportation, and Strategic Sciences, he holds a master’s degree in International Strategic-Military Studies from ROME, a 2nd level master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the University of TURIN, a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College in Carlisle, in the United States, and a master’s degree in Global Strategy and Security from the University of Turin.

The IGMI Superior School of Geographic Sciences was established in 1872 and is in charge of carrying out training and continuing education for military and civilian staff of the Ministry of Defence, in the field of cartography and related disciplines.
Prominent figures such as Giovanni Boaga, Antonio Marussi and Ermenegildo Santoni are among those who have taught at the School of Geographic Sciences.
