The Web Feature Service (WFS) is an open standard developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) for creating Web services for sharing geographic objects. These can be displayed as the single elements that make up a map.
Thus, the WFS allows users not only to visualize geographic data within GIS software, but also to be able to analyze all their attributes. Contextually, it is possible to download a copy of the original data. In accordance with the Directive (EU) 2019/1024, The Italian Military Geographic Institute has published two WFS services, one for state land borders data and the other for toponym data of Italy.
Each service is, in addition, associated with a metadata sheet that contains all the information related to it. These sheets can also be consulted through the National Directory of Spatial Data (RNDT).
The service can be accessed through the link available in the “Links” section. However, in order to view its contents, it is necessary to open this service through dedicated software, that is, through a geographic information system (GIS).
An Internet connection and GIS software to process the service.
Below are the links to access the WFS service and the related metadata sheet:
The service is released under a CC BY 4.0 license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ ), use is, therefore, free and open. You may distribute, adjust, create derivative works from the original, even for commercial purposes, provided that the source of the data is acknowledged.
IGMI is not responsible for any kind of direct, indirect or accidental damage resulting from the use of the information collected through the above service.
IGMI, moreover, is the owner administration of the data; in case of use of the data it is mandatory to cite the source.
The service was published on 07-05-2024 and is always active. No deadline is currently expected.
Verto on Line is a software that carries out coordinates conversion, for free and in real time, between the most adopted reference systems in Italy: Roma 40, ED50 and ETRS89, this one in its two realizations, namely ETRF89 and ETRF 2000.
The DBSN (National Synthesis Database) is a geographic database containing the most significant spatial information to carry out thematic analysis and representations at national level.
The Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) is an open standard developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) for the creation of geo-referenced “tile maps” sharing web services.

Pegaso VRS Now is a network of GNSS permanent stations, built by Trimble and certified by the Italian Military Geographic Institute, that provides immediate access to real-time NRTK corrections throughout Italy.
The Open Data Directive, introduced the “high-value” data. Their use can be associated with “important benefits to society, environment and economy.
