The School

The Superior School of Geographic Sciences (SSSG) of the Italian Military Geographic Institute provides training and continuing education for military and civilian personnel of the Italian Ministry of Defence in the field of cartography and related disciplines.
Established in 1872, same year as the founding of the Institute, it was appointed to the training of personnel in charge of national cartography production. Among the scientists who were involved in teaching geotopocartographic disciplines might be recalled: Giovanni Boaga, Antonio Marussi, father of modern mathematical geodesy, and Ermenegildo Santoni, inventor of aero-photogrammetry.

Several courses in advanced training, geographic culture dissemination and support for international security and stabilization missions, are conducted at the School. These courses are intended for:

MILITARY PERSONNEL

  • advanced course in military geography to train military officers to realize military thematic cartography;

  • technical-application course in the area of IGMI cartographic production for newly assigned Officers of the Corps of Engineers;
  • course for student sergeants, specializing in cartography and litho-typography;
  • military personnel employed in military missions abroad;
  • refresher course for geo staff;
  • digital cartography course;

CIVILIAN PERSONNEL

  • courses intended for civilian personnel of the Italian Ministry of Defence, specifically referring to
    legal-administrative, IT, communications security and safety in the workplace.

Seminars and conferences were also held in areas where technology is accelerating fastest (Cosmo SkyMed satellite system, new cartographic software, terrestrial navigation devices, rapid military mapping projects, drones etc.).
